2024 CALLS FOR ENTRies

TEMPEST

OPENING reception | APRIL 5, 2024 | 5PM - 8PM
$30 total intake fee for up to 3 pieces.
submissions due: 03/27/24, 03/28/24, 03/29/24 | 10AM - 5PM

Storm, scorch, freeze, flood, explode, electrify, decimate....nature provides stability and cadence to our lives, but has equal power to disrupt and destroy. Our emotions are pushed and pulled in its wake: foreboding, hubris, fear, anguish, then shelter and hope renewed.

This call for entries invites artists to render a natural disaster, communicating physical immensity and depth of feeling. Representational and abstract interpretations will be considered, as well as 2d and 3d mediums. Remember that Immensity can be conveyed at any size.

Please make sure you are familiar with our show entry guidelines before you submit your work.

charting waters

OPENING reception | june 7, 2024 | 5PM - 8PM
$30 total intake fee for up to 3 pieces.
submissions due: 05/29, 05/30, 05/31 10 AM - 4 PM

Cottonwood Center for the Arts is pleased to announce an open call for entries for the month of June 2024: CHARTING WATERS

Water in its many forms can nourish or destroy, fill an aquarium, flood a plain, quench your thirst, thaw, freeze, boil, or evaporate into the air. For this call we are asking artists to examine the nature of water, and its simple beauty as a part of our environment. All styles/mediums will be considered as long as the main subject matter is water, depicted in a thoughtful and deliberate way.

Please make sure you are familiar with our show entry guidelines before you submit your work.

ATOMIC AGE

OPENING RECEPTION | AUGUST 2, 2024 | 5 PM TO 8 PM
$30 total intake fee for up to 3 pieces
SUBMISSIONS DUE: 7/24, 7/25, 7/26 - 10 AM TO 4 PM; 7/27 10 AM TO 2 PM

The Atomic Age refers to an era of world history that started with the explosive end of WWII and spanned the race to explore space. Mid-century artists and designers reflected both the optimism for a world of tomorrow and the dread of world annihilation. Their forms, styles, and color palettes connect with contemporary audiences, as we enjoy movies like Oppenheimer and Asteroid City, the resurgence of mid-mod inspired interior design, and the ubiquity of the ‘little black dress’.

As we approach 90 seconds to midnight on the Doomsday Clock, as well as unprecedented tech advances enhancing daily life, this call for entries asks artists to use the aesthetic of the Atomic Age as a point of inspiration/departure to express a idea or composition pertinent to their experience.

Previously exhibited works will not be accepted. All mediums will be considered…in fact, we feel that this call in particular lends itself to multimedia installation. If you have an unconventional project in mind, please reach out to our Director of Curation to discuss the possibilities. Please make sure you are familiar with our show entry guidelines before you submit your work.

DAY GLO

OPENING reception | DECEMBER 6, 2024 | 5PM - 8PM
$30 total intake fee for up to 3 pieces.
submissions due: 11/20, 11/21 - 10 AM - 4:30 PM, 11/22 10 AM - 1:30 PM

An accident in 1933 leads to a dark room recovery, which in turn leads to the inspiration of fluorescent pigments for the Switzer Brothers.

Working together Bob & Joe experimented with chemicals until they successfully obtained pigments that appeared fluorescent in daylight and glow under uv/blacklights.

With the creation of these new pigments they quickly became the staple of safety measures in work environments such as airports, construction sites, underwater & military operations.  These pigments launched not only safety measures far beyond what we had known but  aided magicians in fooling the eye and sky rocketed psychedelic / black light art in a way that shook the 60’s and 70’s.

Eventually becoming the world’s largest producer of daytime fluorescents, or as we know them Day Glo.

Nearly ninety years later we are asking artists to conduct their own experiments with these colors and illuminate our dark winter months. What makes your day glow? What makes your soul glow? What brings light to your darkness?

How can you catch the eye of a passerby with neon?

We will be accepting entries from all mediums and styles as long as they utilize fluorescent colors in an intentional way.

Previously exhibited works will not be accepted. All mediums will be considered. Please make sure you are familiar with our show entry guidelines before you submit your work.
