COLOR MIXING WORKSHOP
INSTRUCTOR: BEN BIRES

Let’s talk color! This workshop introduces effective ways to mix paint with a palette knife that will prepare your painting for success. Think of it as a bit of “prepwork” ahead of time before you actually start a painting. Get all your colors mixed, and enough of them (that way you don’t have to backtrack and mix more of that same color!) then begin to apply paint to the canvas.

It’s a bit of a process going from seeing the color, matching it and then using the brush. We will focus on mixing enough colors with less tubes of paint and have them organized on the palette for each section of your composition. It’ll be smooth sailing once we cover some basics of color characteristics and learn how to get through a painting from beginning to end.

MATERIALS
All materials are supplied with a $20 fee payable to your instructor at the start of class. You may want to bring a smock or apron to protect your clothes too.

MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Ben’s encouraging style of teaching provides a welcoming atmosphere to enjoy a creative outlet. He’s all about bringing people together and having a good time while getting to know his students’ goals. He will push you out of your comfort zone and do whatever he can to make you a better painter. His love for the outdoors brought him and his wife to Colorado Springs in 2016, which led him to begin teaching landscape painting classes here at Cottonwood shortly after. A big fan of music, there’s always some good tunes playing in class to set the tone for a productive paint session. His loose painting style involves bold color balanced with dramatic brushstrokes that captures emotion and creates a sense of movement in his scenes.
