INTRO TO SCULPTURE

INTRO TO SCULPTURE
INSTRUCTOR: RYAN ARAGON

This course will provide you with an introduction to three-dimensional sculpture. Through an emphasis on the elements and principles of art and design, you will learn to grasp foundational concepts, materials and techniques used to create sculpture. You will develop four consecutive projects using specific materials and various additive and subtractive processes tailored to each project.

The first project begins with the basic one-dimensional line that can be utilized, using various wires, to create the underlying structure of gesture and form. The second project builds upon the groundwork and structure of the first to create more complex and detailed forms/character out of oven-baked polymer clay. The third project makes use of an assemblage of preexisting forms/objects with their own unique formal and/or conceptual importance to create work with new meaning and significance. The final project gives you the opportunity to refine, rework or build upon an earlier project, or to create something new using materials and processes of your choice, based on what was learned in the class.

In conjunction with each project, we will also discuss each artwork done in informal critiques to help refine and facilitate communication around the work. By the end of this class, you will have a solid grasp of the foundations of sculpture from which you can begin to make nearly anything that you can imagine.

MATERIALS
Students will need to bring a sketchbook and a pencil or pen for sketching ideas and note taking, along with found objects of their choice for the third project. Additional materials will be provided with a $35 fee, payable to your instructor at the first class session.
